Tesla CEO Elon Musk continues to bat for Dogecoin, a currency he has championed since early this year. Mr Musk’s support has, in part, facilitated DOGE’s meteoric growth since January, as it has gained more than 4,000 percent of its value. He and his followers hope to spike the currency towards $1 (£0.70), but it recently slipped.

Despite his continued support, Dogecoin holders seemed put off by Elon Musk’s recent appearance on Saturday Night Live.

During the appearance, the currency haemorrhaged nearly a quarter of its total value, crashing to £0.32 from £0.47 after he joked it was a “hustle” in a skit.

But he remains convinced of its relative supremacy on the market and seems to be entertaining it as a payment alternative at Tesla.

He asked his 54.1 million-strong Twitter base whether they would support the move.

Below a tweet asking the question, he posted an online poll.

And his followers seemed to overwhelmingly support the potential move from the multi-billion electric car manufacturers.

Of the 3.9 million people who responded, 78.2 percent supported it, while just 21.8 percent didn’t.

Several of his followers voiced their opinions in comments.

One said: “DOGE is about to go ripping out of this galaxy.”

Another added: “I say yes! Not only would it be great for the coin, but also then #dogearmy can buy your amazing cars with our amazing coins!”

Others, however, seemed less tolerant of the CEO’s teasing.

“You’re gonna tell us right now whether you’re gonna do this.”

They added: “I’m sleepy my guy.”

Mr Musk has not made any official announcement just yet, but Dogecoin has responded.

Around the time he posted the poll at 9.15am yesterday, DOGE rallied.

At 9am, DOGE was worth £0.32, and by 9.30am it had risen to £0.36.

Since then, however, DOGE has dropped back down again to £0.32.
