PIP: Your payment may be reviewed – Britons will need to take action

PIP is designed to help with the extra costs associated with disability and certain health conditions. The amount a person ultimately receives when approved will depend on how their condition affects them, rather than the condition itself. The payment is tax-free, and available to people whether they are in or out of work.
But if a person is approved to receive PIP, this will not be the end of their claim.
It is worth bearing in mind that claimants could have their claim reviewed at any time by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Reviews usually take place for two main reasons it is important to bear in mind.
Firstly, people can expect to have their claim reviewed to ensure they are receiving the correct amount.
A PIP review of this kind will involve several processes, but the DWP is taking into consideration of a number of factors.
The government department will extend a PIP award, increase or decrease payments, or decide to end a PIP claim.
Claimants can expect to receive a letter from the DWP informing them of a review, which will then require them to complete a form.
The form, entitled ‘Award review – how your disability affects you’ will ask Britons to fill in relevant information about their condition and its effect on their everyday lives.

The questions contained within the form are based on the same activities covered by the original claim form, such as getting out and about, preparing food and hygiene.
People in receipt of PIP are then required to fill out the form, providing the relevant information, as well as any changes since a last assessment.
It is important for claimants to return this within 28 days, as if the form is not sent back in time, the DWP will stop a claim unless there is a good reason for the delay.
It is then the task of the DWP to review a form, and Britons may receive a call from an independent health professional, asking them further questions.
They may also be required to undertake an assessment over the phone if additional information is required.
Another reason why PIP may be reviewed is to make sure benefit fraud is not taking place.
The DWP has said it is committed to ensuring only those who need benefits are in receipt of them.
While PIP fraud is sometimes described as difficult to commit, the government can conduct investigations if it is suspected.
If people disagree with a decision made about their claim, they can take steps to challenge it in a process known as mandatory reconsideration.
Britons must contact their benefits office that gave them the decision by phone, letter or form.
Mandatory reconsideration must be requested within one month of the date on a decision letter.
Generally, when thinking about PIP, the benefits organisation Turn2Us has advised Britons to renew their claim early to avoid any gaps in receipt of PIP.
It states: “You can ask to renew your claim in the last six months before your PIP award ends.
“You will need to complete another form and go to another medical assessment.”
However, for those with a fixed-term award due to expire soon, the DWP has said they will automatically extend the end date.
