‘Save hundreds of pounds over a month’: Finance educator’s ingenious savings trick

Making relatively small changes to your food habits could save you huge sums of cash. Ellie Austin-Williams is a certified financial educator and the host of the Money Unfiltered podcast. 

She posts about financial issues on her blog This Girl Talks Money and shares her expertise with 15.5k followers on her Instagram.

The 29-year-old became interesting persion finance while training to be a lawyer.

She said: “I wanted to figure out what to do with my money. I started looking around and there was nothing remotely interesting for a 20-something-year-old who didn’t want to just save everything and live like a hermit, or go wild.”

The lack of resources inspired Ellie to create her own, and now she helps thousands with her useful financial information.

Ellie recommends boosting your finances by reducing expenses, including when it comes to food.

She recommended one very simple way to save hundreds of pounds a month.

“It’s all about planning,” Ellie said.

“I’m a big advocate of don’t go to a shop without a list.

“That’s the one way you can guarantee you’re going to spend more money is if you just turn up and decide what to buy.

“Plan your meals ahead via a shopping list and be intentional about going shopping.”

She added: “Don’t shop for food when you’re hungry, it’s a recipe for disaster.”

She went on: “You can save so much money on food by just being organised.”

Ellie added being organised about eating at home and limiting how much you eat out can save hundreds.

She said: “It’s not saying never go out to eat but if you can eat 90 percent of your meals at home versus 50, you’re going to save like hundreds of pounds over a month.

“It doesn’t take that much effort to plan ahead.”

Another finance expert, Mrs Mummypenny, told Express.co.uk her clever savings tip involving pots. 

She explained she makes use of the pots option in her online banking.

Lynn said: “I have my money that sits in my current account and then every time I receive some money I move money off into my savings pots, which are in the bank account.

“It sort of moves the money so you can’t spend it.”

A number of banks provide these kinds of pots with online banking, including TSB.
