A mattress should last you between eight and 10 years if you take care of it properly. Mattresses can sag and lose support over time, but there are tips that you can follow to try and make your mattress last as long as possible.

The Sleep Council, an organisation that encourages people to look after their sleep, has shared their best advice on how to properly take care of your mattress.

First of all, as soon as you get a new mattress, it is best to unwrap it immediately.

Removing the plastic wrapping as soon as possible will get rid of the chemical smell that some mattresses have when they are new.

This smell should disappear after the mattress has been aired.

A mattress should be aired for a few days when it is new, but also it is a good idea to air it daily.

You can throw back your duvet and pillows in the morning and leave your bed to air for 20 minutes.

This will allow body moisture to evaporate out.

There is no need to take off your mattress sheet or cover when doing this.

If the manufacturer advises it, your mattress should be turned over every week for the first three months, then every three to four months after that.

This will help the upholstery fillings to settle down more evenly.

Some mattresses should not be turned over, but it is still important to regularly rotate them, which can be done using the handles that often come on either side of a mattress.

Another great way to take care of your mattress is to use a mattress protector.

Mattress protectors can be used to keep your mattresses cleaner and can help if you have a dust allergy.

A protector can also keep you warmer during the night if you buy a fluffy or thick cover.

Additionally, a mattress topper is a handy and cheap investment to make if you find that your mattress is becoming less comfortable over time.

Some mattress toppers cost as little as £10 and add an extra layer of memory foam or padding to the top of your mattress.

Lastly, cleaning your mattress regularly is one of the most important things you can do to properly take care of it.

The average adult sheds around 454 grams of dead skin over the course of a year, much of which ends up in your bed, according to the Sleep Council.

Vacuuming your mattress from time to time will help to remove dust, keep the mattress fresh, and prevent allergies.

Experts advise cleaning mattresses every six months.
